Indonesia-based Nazava Water Filters has been announced as the winner of the 2016 Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy and Water, supported by the Waterloo Foundation.

The Ashden Awards are a globally recognised measure of excellence in the field of sustainable energy and each winner receives up to £30,000 prize money as well as tailored business support to scale up their work.

Buying water from refill stations in Indonesia costs more than $100 a year per family and the water is often contaminated. Some 26,000 Indonesian children die annually from waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea.

Based in Bandung, West Java, Nazava Water Filters enable lower income households to purify their well or tap water without the need to boil it by burning wood or using electricity. This reduces disease and sickness, lowers household costs and reduces CO₂ emissions.

The company has sold over 53,000 water filters and over 200,000 people acquire their daily drinking water from a Nazava water filter.

The Award judges said:

“With Nazava Water Filters we have the three A’s: accessible, affordable and aspirational. Their model of providing safe clean water to families in rural Indonesia has huge potential for replication in other parts of the world and doesn’t require massive infrastructure behind it to be successful.”

Winners will be presented with their Award at a prestigious ceremony being hosted by BBC  journalist Mishal Husain at the Royal Geographical Society in London on Thursday 9 June, when the winners of the Ashden UK and International Gold Awards will also be announced.
