Help Distribute 10,000 Water Filters to Ukraine: Provide Safe Drinking Water to War Victim

What is the water problem in Ukraine?

In Ukraine, over 5 million people remain internally displaced, including millions of children. Eighteen million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Recently, airstrikes have intensified, destroying hospitals, water facilities, schools, and kindergartens. Access to education, healthcare, and social services has been severely disrupted.

According to UNICEF, 5 million people in Ukraine lack access to safe water.

This issue is widespread across the country, but it is particularly critical in cities and the eastern regions. In eastern Ukraine, most people depend on water supply systems for drinking water, many of which have been destroyed due to the war.  Additionally, open water sources have been contaminated by the bodies of war victims. With the lack of adequate water filtration systems, the risk of cholera and diarrhea outbreaks is high.

Even in central cities like Uman the water quality is now so bad that residents cannot even use it for washing like in the picture below. Text says :  “Good day! What do you think, where can we use this water? Will the toilet be okay from this water? 4.09.24, Zakh. Ukraine street”

water quality right now in Uman Ukraine need for water filters is great

NGOs like UNICEF and the Red Cross are aware of these problems. However, ongoing violent attacks prevent many NGOs from directly assisting victims in active war zones. Furthermore, many organizations focus on repairing and replacing existing water supply systems or installing large-scale safe water systems in central public locations, such as hospitals. As a result, many households still lack access to safe drinking water.

Solution

De Leeuw Kyiv Foundation together with SAVE UA already distributed over 22 thousand Nazava water filters impacting nearly 100 thousand people.

Because lately the need for water filters is increasing we want to provide another 10,000 water filters to Ukraine.  With these filters we aim  to provide access to safe drinking water to at least 50,000 children and vulnerable people at the frontline in Ukraine.  Nazava water filters are WHO tested (see WHO report), extremely durable and portable and can be used anywhere with most water sources. Because the filters are mostly Ukrainian made they are very affordable.

How We Operate:

  1. Nazava PROT3CT filter elements, taps, hoses, and instruction manuals are shipped from Jakarta to Ukraine via the Netherlands.
  2. Food-grade containers are sourced from a factory in Dnipro, supporting the local Ukrainian economy.
  3. The complete filter sets are assembled in Uman, Ukraine by internally displaced persons (IDPs), who are paid a standard Ukrainian salary.
  4. This process is organized and managed by the SaveUA foundation, which works in collaboration with the Ukrainian Agri Council, a trusted partner of the De Leeuw Kyiv Foundation.
  5. Ukrainian workers, including IDPs and locals, distribute the filter sets, receiving regular wages for their efforts.
SaveUA also helps identify the populations most in need.
  6. Each complete set includes a Nazava PROT3CT filter element, a tube, a tap, two buckets, and an instruction manual.

Where did previous 22 000 water filters filters go:

Thanks to our earlier fundraising for Ukraine  SAVE ua could distribute 22 thousand water filters!  The people who received the water filters live near the Eastern Front (e.g. Kharkiv) and the south e.g.  Mykolaiv & Kherson. In the south we targeted populations that were affected by the floodings as well as the war.  Because rocket and drone attack target infrastructure all over Ukraine we have received requests from the entire eastern Ukraine.

The water filters are received there with great joy: “Thank you, thank you! This is exactly what we need right now. The people have been without water for a month. People need clean drinking water. Thank you and we ask that you please come back with more!” says Ljudmilla from Visokopilla City Council, Kherson region.

Residents of Mykolaiv Anastasia and Sergei no longer have to stand in long queues for the central water point in the city: “We are extremely grateful for this practical gift. The situation in Mykolaiv has been very bad for months with salty and yellow water. These filters are much needed for us. Thank you.”

The filters are distributed by the wonderful people at SaveUA. Risking their lives, they travel to areas that are under constant fire to help the people there.
